Those of you that know me know that I can drink mezcal and tequila like water. What makes it even better is the fact that once I mix in some turmeric and ginger, the drink becomes even better (for you) ;)
Ginger and turmeric are two flavors that I’ve grown up with and both of them are known for many healthful benefits. With summer officially beginning, there’s no better way than to celebrate with a glass of a refreshing and ‘haldi’ (no pun intended ;) haldi is turmeric in Hindi) margarita.
Ingredients (for each serving):
1 ounce ginger turmeric simple syrup*
1 ounce of your favorite mezcal or tequila. If you opt for tequila, I prefer gold for the deeper flavor
1 ounce fresh lime juice
*as you can tell, it’s all equal parts of everything!
Mint leaves for garnish (optional)
Directions:
*To make the syrup ahead of time:
Combine 1 cup water, 1/2 cup sugar, and 3 inches peeled and sliced fresh ginger in a saucepan
Place over medium/high heat. Cook until the sugar dissolves and bring to a slight boil
Add 2 teaspoons turmeric powder and still until incorporated. Let steep for at least 1 hour
Strain and store in an airtight container until it’s cocktail making time!
1. Prepare the rimmed glass by running a lime wedge around the rim. In a small plate, 1 teaspoon mix red chili powder, 2 teaspoons salt, and 1 teaspoon turmeric powder. Dip the glass rum into the salt mix.
2. In a cocktail shaker, combine the mezcal/tequila, ginger-turmeric syrup, and lime juice. Add ice and shake with power. Shake it up! Shake it up! If you like extra spice, feel free to add a pinch of your favorite chilli or ghost pepper powder, or even sliced jalapeño to the shaker.
3. Add ice to your glass. With a cocktail strainer, pour the drink over the ice.
4. (Optional) Garnish with mint.
5. Enjoy!
